WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?
Well, I know I’m MC K~Swift, one of the founding members of the New Rap Order, also a member of the Universal Zulu Nation. I’m the oldest of two sons, and my parents made us handsomely. I am a child of the sun, and a concerned citizen of the earth.
WHAT DO YOU DO THAT IS SO SPECIAL?
I do a few special things. For starters, I create beautiful, thoughtful and oftentimes loud Hip Hop music. I also facilitate creative writing and performance workshops for teens through non-profits like Urban Word NYC and Youth Speaks. I also do workshops with educators at the High School and University Levels on bringing Hip Hop Education into their classrooms. Oh, I’m also one of the producers of a weekly show on WBAI 99.5FM New York called Rise Up Radio. It airs every Friday night from 9-10pm and streams live at www.wbai.org, yo.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL YOUR LIFE?
My life started in my birthplace, Brooklyn. My first home was in Brownsville, and I’ve lived around the country and overseas. I was an Army Brat, so I’ve domiciled in Hawaii, Tennessee, Kentucky and Germany among other places. But I’ve lived in the Lower East Side (Lowa Deck!) since 1994. That’s the year I started recording on a professional tip actually. I’ve also been to a number of places that I haven’t lived in. I won’t list all of those, but I’ll say my favorite place to visit is Oakland, California.
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO BE FAMOUS?
I’ve heard that I am famous, and I didn’t hear that from myself! On the real though, I’m not looking for fame, as much as I have an appreciation for recognition. I was a champion athlete in middle and high school, and an academic scholarship student along with that, so I think that quality work which resulted from dedication can be rewarded in many ways. Also, I express an opinion in my songs on the state of the world that I think is worth listening to. It’s a point of view that isn’t given enough light by mainstream media. It’s the “intelligent hood” point of view.
WHY SHOULD ANYONE CARE?
I was just about to tell you. The world is a mess. The United States and many of its people pretend to play the role of World Guardians. However, the actions of many capitalistic entities based in the US contribute to the death and destruction of poor people around the planet. That’s pretty much why I care.
